I'm Kelly Kim. Even though I'm foremost an English/Language Arts/Literature teacher in the middle school, I happen to have an scientific (sort of!) Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Gallaudet University. I also have my Master's degree in Deaf Education from National Technical Institute of the Deaf and CAGS degree from Boston University. While I was a graduate student at BU, I was on the Student Leadership Team with Gallaudet's Visual Learning, Visual Language (VL2) research department. At BU, I have participated in scientific research, which involved coding linguistic input among deaf and hard of hearing children who use ASL. I have a pretty good knowledge of statistics and the scientific method used in research.
When I was first hired, the principal asked me if I could teach science. I was like, sure, but why? He said yeah because I have a psychology degree. Aha... I do have background in the study of the brain and behavior...which is true... ;-)
What science courses have I taught here at TLC?
Since 2012, I taught Earth Science and Physical Science in the Middle School. Currently, for the academic year 2014 - 2015, I teach Technology & Engineering for the winter and spring quarters. In the fall quarter, I recently taught Humanities which involved a scientific dialogue of psychology and anthropology (especially archaeology).
My Education:
B.A., Psychology, Gallaudet University
M.S., Secondary Education for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Learners, National Technical Institute of the Deaf
C.A.G.S., Education of the Deaf, Boston University
My Certifications:
DESE-issued certifications in English Grades 6 - 8, English Grades 9 - 12, and ASL as a Foreign Language Grades 5 - 12.
My Goals/Interests:
To earn DESE-issued certifications in Deaf Education and General Science.
To align/infuse my teaching content areas in ELA and STEM classes and one day, finally teach a psychology class!
To advocate for ENGLISH AND ASL LITERACY in the STEM field.
To learn more about how to sign STEM concepts.
"Once you have an innovation culture, even those who are not scientists or engineers - poets, actors, journalists - they, as communities, embrace the meaning of what it is to be scientifically literate. They embrace the concept of an innovation culture. They vote in ways that promote it. They don't fight science and they don't fight technology." - Neil deGrasse Tyson
